Close to the water
The Sigmund Thun Gorge is a summer highlight in Kapruna and the gorge is suitable for a visit during all weather conditions. In July and August you can escape from the sweltering summer heat and on rainy days, the roofing above the wooden walkways offers protection from the rain. Depending on your preference, you can extend the excursion with a hike on the Bürkogel or around the Klammsee. Under this link, our guests will find further route suggestions on this topic. If you have your children with you, you can walk a short distance to the kiosk located at the end of the gorge and you will find a small playground there. The brave ones can put their feet in the glacier water on the gravel bank of the Kapruner Ache.

GorgeLights
From June to September, the Sigmund Thun Gorge is lit up by colorful lights every Friday evening and in July and August, also on Tuesdays. Next to the thundering water, the columns of light shine up to the top of the gorge and the spectacle starts at dusk and lasts about 2 hours.
Mythical Night of the Water
In July and August, the gorge also comes to life every Monday evening. The difference between the Mythical Night of the Water with the gorge lights is that the former is a guided hike. By torchlight, the gorge is particularly romantic. The hustle and bustle comes to an end at the kiosk at Klammsee, where there is a campfire and baked potatoes for guests. Adults pay 10 euros and children pay 5 euros for the all-inclusive ticket.

Restaurant at Klammsee
At the upper end of the Klammsee there is a kiosk restaurant, which is open daily in good weather. While the parents are sitting on the sun terrace, they can watch the children play. The small menu ranges from small snacks to hearty dishes. After your summer hike you can refresh with some cool drinks from their menu.

The gorge is open every day from 8:30 to 17:00. However, in October these hours are shortened from 10:00 to 15:00. The prices are as follows:

The history of the Sigmund Thun Gorge
- Archaeologists found evidence of ramparts from the 15th and 16th centuries, indicating the existence of an agricultural culture in the upper Kaprun valley.
- The first developments of the Kaprun valley with paved roads began in 1890, and a little later, the first wooden footbridges were fixed in the gorge. It was named after the then governor of Salzburg, Sigmund Graf von Thun.
- In 1938, the plants were dismantled again as hydroelectric power generation came to the fore.
- In 1992, the beauty of this natural monument was recognized, and the paths were rebuilt over the last few years.
