Snowshoeing
Winter hiking in Kaprun with snowshoes through dreamy forests in hibernation is a wonderful change from the colorful skiing at the Kitzsteinhorn. Winter hiking with or without snowshoes depends on the amount of snow but when hiking through the freshly snow-covered deep snow landscape, snowshoes are worth their weight in gold.
Winter & snowshoe hiking – routes:
- Filzmoosweg: forest hike through the Filmooswald, which is a protected landscape, below the Jakobskapelle chapel past Kaprun castle to the Salzachweg, 4.7 km
- Brunnwiesenweg: circular trail from the center of Kaprun in the Kapruner Moos, 4.2 km
- Grossentalweg: moderately difficult hike on partly asphalted road and through a small piece of forest, 4.2 km
- Güterweg Maiskogel: on the Schaufelbergstraße the hike leads uphill to the mountain inn Stangerbauer, stop for refreshments at the snack station Unteraigen, 3.4 km
Ski mountaineering
Breathe in – breathe out – pause. When ski touring in Kaprun, you are also assured of picture-perfect motifs on your ski tour. Can’t wait to put on your touring skis? On the Kitzsteinhorn from Langwiedboden, the ski touring season starts already in autumn and is possible until late spring.

- Snow Queen: 474 vertical meters, destination: Alpincenter.

Rules for safe ski touring on the Kitzsteinhorn:
- Observe warnings, closures and local regulations
- Observe closures in case of avalanche danger and avalanche blasting
- Bring your safety equipment: Avalanche transceiver (LVS), shovel, probe.
- Always wear a helmet
- Only ascend at the edge of the slope and one after the other
- Cross the slope only at clear places
- Do not take dogs on the ski slope

Snowshoe rental
You don’t need much for a snowshoe hike: waterproof shoes with good soles, plenty of snow and a large portion of anticipation. Hiking poles make trudging through deep snow easier and ensure safety. You can rent snowshoes and telescopic poles at Bründl Sports in the Maiskogelbahn valley station.
